So since the lockdown started, many people became plant parents. Yes, we are looking at you - standing in the hardware shop looking for items for your DIY projects you finally have time for. Then you pass the house plant section and your eyes light up as you come across, what is to become your new obsession. All jokes aside, the chances are you some clients at home or in your garden. Below we are going to go through 4 basic tips to keep you succulent, happy and ALIVE!
1. Make sure your plant babies are getting enough light
Succulents are hardy plants but they still need some TLC, for them to flourish. They love light and needs a few hours of sunlight per day. Of course, this is also dependant on the type of succulent. If you aren’t sure what type of succulent you have, ask someone at your local nursery. As with all newly planted, plants succulents might need to be slowly introduced to their new sunny corner of your home, as they can “burn” in direct sunlight. Check out the article on Succulent box, for more.
2. Rotate your succulents
Even though your succulents love the sun, they also need to be rotated. As they will most likely be sitting in their designated spot you chose. The chances are on one side of your succulent is getting enough sunlight while the other is crying out for some. Like most plants, these succulents will also grow towards the light sources. That is why is important to rotate your plants frequently. This will help the plants grow strong and stand upright.
3. Water the soil not your Succulent
All plants need water to survive - obviously right?
There are a few tricks for watering your succulents:
Water/soak the soil, not the plant. Keep soaking the soil until the water comes out of the drainage hole of the pot your plant is in (if it does not have a drainage hole, use less water).
Avoid spraying/misting your succulents as it can lead to your plant developing brittle roots
If you have a shallow container, fill it with water and place your succulent pots in the container. The soil will absorb water through the drainage hole in the pots. As soon at the top of the soil is damp, you can remove your succulents from the container.
4. Keep Succulents Clean
This might seem like a strange tip, but hear us out.
Because your succulent is indoors, it will pick up dust and dirt, which is natural (don’t worry). After a while, if there is a lot of accumulated dust and dirt, it will affect the plants’ growth. Wipe the leaves, stems and spines once a week (gently!) with a damp cloth to remove the dust and dirt build-up.
Best of luck with your new plant babies!
